Competition for the 2011 Solar Decathlon began nearly two years ago when the teams battled their peers for one of the 20 places in the Solar Village to be assembled on the National Mall in Washington DC in the Fall.
To secure a spot, each team submitted extensive proposals, including models of their conceptual designs. Along the way, there are dates upon which the teams must submit "deliverables" to the DOE for review, at which time a portion of the teams' grant is released to them. Yesterday, for example, the computer aided walkthrough and scale models had to be submitted. Many of the teams will take their scale models to display at the National Association of Home Builder’s Show in Orlando, Florida 12-14 January.
Between now and 22 March (the deliverable date for all construction details to be complete), the teams will be hard at work finalizing designs.
