Desert Tortoise CrawlingThe Sierra Club, Natural Resources Defense Council and the Defenders of Wildlife filed a lawsuit against the federal government to stop a CSP project in California’s Mojave Desert. The environmental groups say it will harm the desert tortoise, the golden eagle and other protected wildlife.

The 663.5MW Calico solar plant is slated to be built on 7.2-square miles of government-owned land in the Mojave Desert in San Bernardino County. K-Road Power bought the project from Tessera Solar in late 2010.

The lawsuit, filed 26 March in US District Court against the Interior Department, seeks to move the project to another site that’s out of desert tortoise habitat.
