WhisperPower, a diesel generator company based in the Netherlands, today announced its participation in the Frisian Solar Challenge as the main sponsor of the Vripack Solar Team.
The Frisian Solar Challenge is a sustainable event in the Netherlands, focused on the design and construction of ultra-lightweight high-speed solar vessels strong enough to complete a 220-kilometre race past 11 cities in the Dutch province of Friesland. This year’s race will take place from 8 to 14 July.
WhisperPower is working to improve the electrical system and existing technologies. It will equip the vessel with a propulsion system powered by a permanent magnet motor. Four solar panels power a battery that supplies the boat’s energy. By using various gears combined with a propeller designed by Marin, the solar vessel will be able to reach speeds up to 24 knots.
Naval architects at Vripack have focused on designing an optimal hull shape for the vessel. The hull is currently under construction at Epomat, using new technologies to ensure an exceptionally light overall weight.
A specially developed communication system will keep the vessel’s operator up-to-date on how to best use the vessel during the race. The system will also inform the driver about competitors’ performance and provide other information.
