Hitachi America’s Industrial and Infrastructure Systems Division announced that it is focusing on energy storage for the smart grid to complement wind and solar farms.
As part of its announcement, the company said it is making its Long Life Lead Acid Battery available in the North American marketplaces. Previously only offered in Japan, the Long Life batteries have significant advantages over regular lead acid batteries. They provide one to four hour discharge; operate in ordinary temperatures; provide for instant start up; have a 15 to 17 year battery life (depending on discharges and environmental temperatures); and they are recyclable.
