The Solar Foundation (TSF), an independent nonprofit solar research and education organization, today announced the release of its State Solar Jobs Map, a web-based tool providing the first-ever solar jobs numbers for each of the fifty states. These new state numbers build upon TSF’s National Solar Jobs Census 2012, which found that the US solar energy industry employs 119,016 Americans and that solar employment grew 13.2% over the prior year, making it one of the fastest growing industries in the country.

For the first time, solar energy accounted for all new utility electricity generation capacity added to the US grid last month, according to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC’s) March 2013 “Energy Infrastructure Update.” More than 44 megawatts (MW) of solar electric capacity was brought online from seven projects in California, Nevada, New Jersey, Hawaii, Arizona, and North Carolina. All other energy sources combined added no new generation.

The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) today announced it has hired Capitol Hill veteran Ken Johnson, who previously headed up the communications efforts for the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) and two major committees in the US House of Representatives, as vice president of communications.

The US Department of Energy's (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has launched an initiative to build an open-source database of real-world performance from solar facilities across the country. As part of DOE's SunShot Initiative, the Open Solar Performance and Reliability Clearinghouse (O-SPaRC) will give the private market tools to develop investment vehicles to tap low-cost public capital.

John Smirnow, Vice President of trade and competitiveness at the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), has been designated chairman of the US Department of Commerce’s Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Advisory Committee (RE&EEAC). The re-charted committee was launched in recent days by US Commerce Deputy Secretary Rebecca Blank.

Indonesia is said to about to launch a tender next month for 150MW of new solar photovoltaic energy. It is estimated that the tender will last for two months.
