A one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work when it comes to deriving full benefits of solar energy. Each country has its own variabilities such as climate, socio-economic structure, terrain, skills, etc., and therefore, each area can benefit the most from different types of solar or solar applications.

The dramatic rise in energy costs from non-renewable sources has made alternative energy sources such as solar an intriguing option. Many homeowners however, have been weary to jump into this still evolving market. In the past, the startup costs alone have outweighed the rewards in the eyes of many potential customers. But by applying a tried and true business model, knowledgeable and well trained sales people and installers can walk consumers through the process, apply government incentives and show them that solar not only makes sense but is affordable.

The Solar Decathlon is a unique opportunity for students to learn about renewable energy, construction, architecture, business and marketing, competition and more. The students, both undergraduate and graduate, join the Decathlon team and commit to it for a period of two years. For most of these students it means juggling a full university course load along with what amounts to a high-pressure, full-time job.

On the second day of the India Solar Summit in New Delhi, the first session was on the topic of the Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) market and was presented by Mr. Lokesh Jain of Mott MacDonald. In India, developers are mainly setting up CSP sites in the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan, where there is a lot of barren land and good solar irradiation. Site selection, he said, is an important factor and should take into consideration aspects such as climate conditions, terrain, grid vicinity and accessibility of a water network.

On the first day of the two-day India Solar Energy Summit in New Delhi, a wide range of topics were discussed such as regulatory policies, solar project developments, new technologies and financing. The day was concluded with a panel discussion on the topic: “Symbiotic government and industry partnership for making India a solar superpower”.

After a period of silence, the Dii officially reacted to the current developments in North Africa and the Middle East. “The long-term perspective is important”, said Dii CEO Paul van Son in a German TV show. He admitted that the consortium had not expected these developments.

Many in the solar industry were concerned about the outcome of the communication on renewable energy in the EU by commissioner Öttinger this Monday. Rumors about an EU initiative to harmonize promotion of renewable energies made many political actors in Brussels nervous, and also in particular in the German parliament, government and lobby rooms.
