Tanzania is one of the world's poorest countries based on per capital income. And it is energy poor, with electrification rates of only 14% nationally, falling to 2% in rural regions. Electricity demand, however, is growing between 8.5% to 15% annually. The Government of Tanzania is working to implement TEDAP (Tanzania Energy Development and Access Project) in partnership with the World Bank to improve availability of power supply, but much work is needed.
