Solar Decathlon Europe 2012 is currently underway in Madrid, Spain with 19 teams from 12 different countries competing in this bi-annual event. The event is modelled after the US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, which began in 2002 in Washington, DC. Decathletes travelled to Madrid earlier this month to set up their sustainable solar homes at Villa Solar and compete to in ten juried events, such as level of innovation and energy balance, with prizes given to the three teams with the most points in each category. At the end of the contest, the team with the most overall points will be the final winner.

ITN Awarded Battery Technology Grant

ITN Energy Systems has been awarded US $1.725 million in funding from the US Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) to develop an advanced redox flow battery, in collaboration with the University of Kentucky.
This battery technology is intended to lower costs for grid-scale power systems, and provide affordable energy storage options for small commercial and residential customers.

Oregon Institute of Technology (Oregon Tech) students will join their professor, Dr. Slobodan Petrovic, in Tanzania, on 19 Aug., where they will install solar energy systems for schools and hospitals.
Hillsboro, Oregon (US)-based SolarWorld has donated 30 panels to the program.
The trip is part of Oregon Tech’s BS in Renewable Energy Engineering (BSREE) degree program, the only ABET-accredited energy engineering program in North America.

Yingli Green Energy has teamed up with the US Soccer Federation to announce the formation of Yingli Green Energy’s PASS (Powering Advancement with Solar and Soccer) program in the US. The initiative combines the financial and educational benefits of a solar power system donation with the active lifestyle benefits of soccer.
To kick-off the PASS program, Yingli Green Energy and US Soccer inaugurated a 5kW solar energy system at the KIPP DC WILL Academy public charter school in Washington, DC’s Shaw neighborhood.
