US Army Dedicates 4MW Solar System

US Army White Sands Missile Range Solar PlantThe US Army today dedicated its largest solar photovoltaic system at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.

Developed in coordination with the US Army Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville, Siemens Government Technologies and Bostonia, the 4MW White Sands Missile Range solar energy system will generate approximately 10 million kWh of clean electricity annually, and provide an estimated annual savings of $930,000.

35MW Solar park at Perleberg military airport in Brandenburg, GermanyGerman solar PV company Gehrlicher Solar has recently completed the construction of a 90 hectare solar park on the grounds of the former Perleberg military airport in Brandenburg, Germany.  The expected electricity output at the site runs to an impressive 33,000,000 kWh per year, equating to annual CO2 savings in the region of 32,000 tons when compared to 'conventional' power generation from fossil fuel based sources.

The capacity crowd bodes well for the Defense Department’s ambitious goal to deploy 3GW of renewable energy, including solar, wind, biomass or geothermal, on Army, Navy and Air Force installations by 2025.

Lockheed P2V Neptune in flightLockheed Martin today announced it has secured a contract with the Office of Naval Research for the design and development of solid oxide fuel cell generator set as an alternative to traditional battlefield power generation equipment.

US solar power production jumped from 887 megawatts (MW) in 2010 to 1,855MW in 2011—that’s a 109% growth rate, making the solar the fastest growing industry in the US, and one that employs 100,000 workers.
