Based in Venray (Netherlands) SolarExcel has developed a proprietary light trapping technology that can significantly increase the efficiency of solar panels. With the acquisition DSM expands its growing portfolio of solar energy enabling technologies. Financial details of the acquisition are not disclosed.

AEG Power Wins Activ Solar Contract

AEG Power Solutions (AEG PS), a global manufacturer of power electronic systems and solutions for industrial power supplies and renewable energies, signed a major contract with Vienna, Austria-based company, Activ Solar. This deal covers photovoltaic (PV) utility-scale equipment and services for a minimum of 170 megawatts (MW) until the end of 2013. It is an extension of the first agreement signed in the second half of 2010 covering the complete electrical systems for 14 PV power plants, each of approximately 20MW.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again—there’s never a dull day in the solar industry. Just this week (and it’s only Wednesday), First Solar, Inc. announced financial results for the fourth quarter and year ended 31 December 2011, which showed that net sales were down $345 million from the third quarter of 2011. Abound Solar announced it is cutting its workforce in Colorado (US). Solar Millennium AG (Germany) announced the start of insolvency proceedings and that the remaining staff of about 40 people was terminated yesterday. But believe it or not, there's some good within the bad, which gives us hope.

Physicists from the University of Amsterdam with a colleague from Charles University of Prague have shown that closely packed silicon nanocrystals can efficiently convert incoming photons in at least twice as many carriers. This method of achieving charge carrier multiplication could potentially increase the efficiency of solar cells.
