German Development’s Electricity, Heat from Solar

Weinsberg local storage project in GermanyPhotovoltaic inverters manufacturer Kaco New Energy today announced it has for the first time developed a complete energy management concept for a local storage project. Since August 2012, a model development has been under way in the town of Weinsberg (Germany), whose electricity and heat supply will come almost exclusively from solar energy.

Solar VC Funding 2007-2012Global venture capital investments plunged nearly 50% to US $992 million in 103 deals in 2012 compared to $1.9 billion raised in 108 deals in the previous year, according to a report by Mercom Capital Group.

The 2012 total represents the lowest amount since 2007.

The team has developed a thermocline solar energy storage system that stores absorbed heat at 93.9% efficiency and a material cost of only $0.78 US per kWh.

Siemens CEO Peter LoscherSiemens plans to sell its solar business and is in talks with potential buyers, the company today said.

“Due to the changed framework conditions, lower growth and strong price pressure in the solar markets, the company’s expectations for its solar energy activities have not been met,” Siemens said in a statement.
