Southwest Solar Advances New CPV Technology
29 February 2012POSTED IN Applications News
Southwest Solar Technologies today announced today is has signed a joint development agreement with MaxQ Power Conversion to drive the commercialisation of its innovative concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) solar power technology.
Under the agreement, the two Arizona-based companies will cooperate to develop and manufacture Southwest Solar’s patent-pending dense array CPV module that packages numerous multi-junction photovoltaic cells into a compact, high-concentration, solar power generation module where a solar concentration ratio of 1,200 times is achieved. The design incorporates a solar flux management capability that enables nonuniform light intensity to be used. This makes it possible to use the CPV product with either dish or heliostat collectors designed for concentrated solar power (CSP).
Solar Tumult: Hanging on with hope
29 February 2012POSTED IN Editors Blogs
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again—there’s never a dull day in the solar industry. Just this week (and it’s only Wednesday), First Solar, Inc. announced financial results for the fourth quarter and year ended 31 December 2011, which showed that net sales were down $345 million from the third quarter of 2011. Abound Solar announced it is cutting its workforce in Colorado (US). Solar Millennium AG (Germany) announced the start of insolvency proceedings and that the remaining staff of about 40 people was terminated yesterday. But believe it or not, there's some good within the bad, which gives us hope.

Utility-Scale Energy Storage
08 February 2012POSTED IN Applications Features
Energy storage is becoming an important aspect of our grid system as renewable energy sources replace more conventional, consistent, carbon-heavy power. Utilities can operate most efficiently from both an energy and financial standpoint, by following the demand curve as closely as possible. When intermittent electricity sources like solar make up more of the power supply mix, utility operators have less control over how much power is produced. This is one of the largest hurdles to increasing renewable grid penetration and it causes utility managers to have to constantly be prepared for dips in renewable output.
