Nanostructure-Coated Black Silicon Solar Cells Via ALD

Aspiring to improve photovoltaic energy conversion efficiency by using latest advances in nanotechnology, researchers at Aalto University, Finland, are combining “black silicon” with the method of atomic layer deposition (ALD). As a result, the nanostructures fabricated by plasma dry etching minimise sunlight reflection. Moreover, a conformal, thin passivating layer, deposited onto the nanostructures through ALD, prevents charge carriers from recombining at the surface.

1366 Technologies Opens New US Manufacturing Facility

1366 Technologies has opened a new, 25MW wafer manufacturing facility in Bedford, Massachusetts (US).
The company says the 42,000-square-foot factory, slated to employ 100 people, represents the final step in the path to commercialization of its Direct Wafer technology, a manufacturing process that 1366 says produces a uniformly better wafer at half the cost.

Hanwha SolarOne Co., Ltd. , a manufacturer of silicon ingots, wafers and photovoltaic cells and modules in China, today announced it has reached an agreement with the Bank of Beijing for access to up to RMB 3.0 Billion (approximately $475 million US) of credit over the next twelve-month period. Drawdown of specific amount is subject to approval procedures of the Bank of Beijing, including review of specific project information, as applicable.

The Schmid Group today announced an efficiency record of 20.74% in an industry-like production process for PERC solar cells, which has been confirmed independently by the ISE CalLab.
Schmid applied the backside passivation to the PERC solar cell with its APCVD machine, which will be exhibited at EV PVSEC 2012 (booth B06, hall 3.0) in Frankfurt, Germany, 25-28 September.

EnergyTrend: Cell Prices, Utilization Rates Drop

A report by EnergyTrend, the green energy research division of TrendForce, says manufacturers’ utilization rates have been on a decline as the market remains in a slump, which in turn affects their inclination to carry out the contracts with suppliers.
EnergyTrend says recently cell makers’ utilization rates ranged between 50% and 70%, with some stronger companies’ utilization rates reaching 70%-80%. Due to the stagnant outlook, companies failing to acquire more orders chose to postpone carrying out their contracts. However, the report says, suppliers are starting to lose patience and put more pressure on their clients.
REC Wafer Norway to File for Bankruptcy

During 2011 and 2012 the production of REC Wafer Norway AS in Glomfjord and in Herøya, both in Norway, was permanently closed down. Activities were initiated to close the company. As of end of July 2012, REC Wafer Norway's liabilities exceeded its assets by about 1.2 billion NOK (~$202 million USD). Thus, a solvent closing of the company was dependent on continued funding from REC ASA, owner of 100% of the shares in REC Wafer Norway.
